HIFU
HIFU (High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound) is the most advanced technology available for non-surgical skin tightening and our specialty at Skin on Ocean – the first clinic to bring HIFU technology to the Sunshine Coast
your hifu experts
Skin on Ocean was the first clinic to bring HIFU to the Sunshine Coast – over 8 years ago.
And in that time, we have worked with hundreds of clients, refined our approach, and built a depth of knowledge that only comes from doing something for a long time. No other clinic in the region has specialised in HIFU longer than we have.
We chose our HIFU technology carefully. Our device uses in-motion technology rather than a cartridge delivery system, which means your treatment is far more comfortable than what most people expect when they first hear the word HIFU. Precise, controlled, and genuinely manageable — even for first-timers.
But the technology is only part of it. What makes the difference is knowing how to use it, understanding how skin responds at different stages, how to space treatments for the best outcome, and how to build a plan that keeps working long after you leave the clinic.
If you have been thinking about HIFU and want to know you are in safe, experienced hands — you have found the right place.
OUR HIFU difference
Not all HIFU devices work the same way — and the difference matters more than most clinics will tell you.
Traditional cartridge-based HIFU delivers energy in fixed, stamped points across the skin. Each press of the device deposits a concentrated burst of ultrasound energy at a single location. For many people, this creates an intense, often painful sensation — and because the energy is delivered in isolated spots, the coverage can feel uneven.
Our device works differently. In-motion HIFU delivers ultrasound energy continuously as the handpiece moves across the skin, creating a more uniform distribution of heat through the targeted tissue layers. The result is a smoother, more consistent treatment — and a significantly more comfortable experience for the client.
HIFU works by delivering focused ultrasound energy to the deeper layers of the skin, stimulating collagen production and triggering a gradual lifting and tightening response. In-motion technology simply allows us to achieve that outcome with greater precision, better coverage, and far less discomfort than older delivery methods.
It is one of the reasons clients who have had HIFU elsewhere — and found it too painful to continue — are often surprised by how different the experience feels with us.
what to expect
Knowing what to expect before your first HIFU appointment makes the whole experience feel easier. Here is exactly what your treatment looks like with our team from start to finish.
You will begin with a thorough consultation and skin assessment. Before anything else, we take the time to understand your skin, your concerns, and what you are hoping to achieve. HIFU is not a one-size-fits-all treatment, and the way we approach your session will be tailored to your individual skin condition and goals.
Once we are ready to begin, a thin layer of ultrasound gel is applied to the treatment area. This allows the handpiece to glide smoothly across the skin and ensures the energy is delivered evenly and effectively.
Your therapist will then move the handpiece across the skin in slow, controlled strokes. You may feel a gentle warmth or mild tingling sensation as the ultrasound energy reaches the deeper layers of tissue — this is completely normal and is a sign the treatment is working. Because we use in-motion technology, most clients find the experience far more comfortable than they anticipated. There is no snapping, no stamping, and no intense bursts of heat.
A full face treatment typically takes around 60 minutes. There is no downtime. You can return to your normal day straight away, though we will recommend a few simple aftercare steps to support your skin in the days following your session.
Results from HIFU develop gradually as your body’s natural collagen response is activated. Most clients begin to notice changes within four to six weeks, with continued improvement over the following months. For best results, we will build a treatment plan that spaces your sessions correctly and supports your skin between visits.

HIFU FAQ's
What results can I expect?
HIFU works with your body’s own natural processes — which means results are gradual and progressive.
In the weeks following your treatment, your skin begins producing new collagen in the deeper tissue layers that were targeted during your session. This is not an overnight change. It is a steady, cumulative improvement that builds over time — and that is precisely what makes it last.
Most clients begin to notice a visible difference within four to six weeks. Skin feels firmer. Lines appear softer. There is a subtle but noticeable lift — particularly around the jawline, brow, and neck. By the three-month mark, the full result is typically visible, and for many clients, it continues to improve beyond that.
What you can expect to see:
- Firmer, more lifted skin along the jawline and lower face
- Softening of fine lines and wrinkles
- Improved skin tone and texture
- A refreshed, more rested appearance — without looking overdone
Results vary depending on your age, skin condition, and how your body responds to collagen stimulation. During your consultation, we will give you an honest picture of what is realistic for your skin specifically — not a generic promise.
How many sessions will I need?
For most clients, we recommend beginning with a single full treatment and reassessing at the six to eight week mark once the initial collagen response has had time to develop. From there, a maintenance treatment every twelve to eighteen months is typically sufficient to sustain results.
Some clients with more advanced skin laxity benefit from a structured program of two to three sessions spaced over several months. We will always recommend what is genuinely right for your skin — nothing more, nothing less.
Is It painful
Most clients are pleasantly surprised. Because we use in-motion technology rather than a cartridge-based system, the treatment is far more comfortable than traditional HIFU. You may feel warmth or a mild tingling sensation as the energy reaches the deeper tissue layers — but the intense pain and discomfort that some people associate with HIFU is not something our clients typically experience.
What is the downtime?
None. You can return to your normal routine immediately after your appointment. Some clients experience mild redness or a slight feeling of tenderness in the treated area for a few hours, but this settles quickly.
what "d" is your hifu device?
Our HIFU machine, the Renova, uses advanced in-motion technology as opposed to a cartridge system such as an “11D” or “21D” HIFU.
The cartridge system refers to the number of depth cartridges available, not necessarily the quality or effectiveness of the treatment itself. Having more depths available doesn’t make the device more superior as for facial treatments we are only physically able to use three effective depths: 1.5mm, 3mm, and 4.5mm. Anything deeper is for body treatments – using that or higher on the face would be dangerous as it penetrates too deeply.
In addition, the in-motion technology makes for a more comfortable treatment experience in comparison to a cartridge HIFU device.
is hifu right for me?
HIFU works best for clients who are beginning to notice skin laxity, loss of firmness, or softening of the jawline and are looking for a non-invasive way to address it. It is not a replacement for surgical intervention in cases of severe laxity, and we will always be honest with you about whether HIFU is the right treatment for where your skin is right now. The best way to find out is through a proper consultation.
*HIFU is not suitable for clients who have had dermal filler within 3 months prior to treatment. It is not suitable for clients with uncontrolled diabetes, who are on blood thinners, are undergoing chemotherapy, have lupis, arthritis, epilepsy or heart disease, have a pacemaker or who are pregnant.
